From the Baritainer to today's market and technology leader

The success story of the MultiCan is exciting to read and shows how closely product development and customer requirements are linked at Müller Plastics.

In the 1980s, Müller Plastics (at the time still Plastomatic) developed a canister for products sensitive to oxygen made of a plastic compound of HDPE and a polyamid barrier for fluids tending to permeate. The company sold it under the name “Baritainer” to companies looking for an industrial packaging with an efficient barrier against gases. Moreover, the Baritainer showed to be ideal for food packaging. This plastic canister, which was state-of-the-art at this time, was also used in the aroma and fragrance industry. It significantly delayed the escape of aromas and fragrances.

The customers actively used this packaging solution up to the 2000s, as it efficiently covered their requirements until then. New market requirements and increased customer demands for quality, improved barrier characteristics and safety led to the development of the MultiCan – as a consistent further development of the Baritainer.

The marketability of the MultiCan was achieved within one year. During product development, the machine manufacturer and the tool manufacturer worked hand in hand in Muttenz under the control of Müller Plastics' specialists. Also customers were involved in the development process. The combination of ideas and of the different points of view, as well as the discussion, testing and taking forward of approaches, led to a new and extraordinary industrial package.

The MultiCan features a six-layer structure – of which one is an all-round barrier layer. This packaging solution has between the inner layer in contact with the product and the outer layer, which can even be conductive for the MultiCan Atex version, an EVOH barrier layer, a reclaim layer and two layers with a bonding agent.

This structure results in increased customer benefit:
  • The filled medium is only in contact with ultrapure HDPE.
  • The characteristics of the customer product remain stable.
  • The permeation of the product is efficiently prevented.
  • The new lid with integrated barrier makes the whole canister system permeation-resistant.
  • Flexible and dimensionally stable transport packaging with UN approval.
  • The MultiCan is newly available also with pharma-grade HDPE.
  • This canister is in particular suitable for products such as e.g. aromas and fragrances, alcohols, additives, solvents, paints and lacquers, and detergents.

The conductive Atex version, which includes an antistatic agent (additive) instead of carbon black, moreover features the following customer benefits:
  • Antistatic and therefore usable in EX Zone I
  • Approved for flammable liquids of the explosion groups IIA and IIB.
  • Complies with the latest ATEX directives of TRGS 727 and TS IEC 60079

Product advantages with respect to thin sheet metal drums:
  • Inexpensive packaging solution
  • Corrosion-free
  • Surface damages due to the transport almost excluded

Sales start in 2009 was impressive. The technical innovations caused a sensation in the market. The Swiss Packaging Institute SVI logically distinguished the MultiCan in October 2010 as the “SWISS STAR 2010”. So the MultiCan and MultiCan Atex canisters started their triumphal march, which is still continuing today.
